That really hit Ed where it hurt. “All I can say is that Preacher Dan was wrong. At least as far as I can understand it. If I could clean myself up, and further, stay that way, why do we need God? The reason He has provided salvation for us it that we can’t clean ourselves up.”

“Guess I’ll wait and watch,” Tim answered. And with that, he hopped down off the tank and trotted off toward a crap game that was going on down the deck a ways.

Finally, the troop ship with its cargo arrived at the Belfast port. It took several days to offload all the equipment. Once that was done, the troops were given several days of free time before shipping out for who knows where. Tim and many of the others were drunk within the first two hours after being turned loose. Tim looked for Ed, to ask him to join him, but he was nowhere to be found.
